Dear friend, pay close attention to what the wisest of men, King Solomon, instructed us.
How wise was Solomon?
"God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore. Solomon's wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the people of the East, and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt. He was wiser than anyone else, including Ethan the Ezrahite—wiser than Heman, Kalkol and Darda, the sons of Mahol. And his fame spread to all the surrounding nations." (1 Kings 5:9-11).
King Solomon wrote at least three books
, three of which are included in the Bible: Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs.
In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon describes himself as a king of immense wisdom to whom many people came to gain wisdom and hear his words.
In the book of Proverbs, we see how much contempt King Solomon attributes to people who are foolish and ignorant (as does his father David in Psalms).
And we see many times that King Solomon says what is the most precious thing in the world, which is the most important investment one should make.
Here are some quotes about the condemnation of fools versus the wise and the importance of investing in wisdom from the book of Proverbs:
King Solomon says several things about fools, including:
A fool finds no pleasure in understanding but delights in airing his own opinions. (Proverbs 18:2)
Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise and they will love you. (Proverbs 9:8)
From this we learn that fools do not like to be corrected and that they do not desire understanding, but rather the expression of their hearts, meaning they want to speak.
In contrast, the wise person loves to be corrected and knows how to be silent and receive information in order to learn.
Only a person who is silent can learn; a person who always wants to be the one speaking will not learn anything,
because a person speaks only what they already know.
And King Solomon says about the importance of acquiring wisdom:
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; (Proverbs 3:5)
And Rashi, the great commentator from about 1000 years ago, explains:
Trust in the LORD – and spend your money to seek a teacher to learn from, and do not rely on your own understanding.
In other words, King Solomon and Rashi are saying don't say 'I already know this, I already understand this!'
Keep your mouth shut and go pay money to a rabbi=expert/wise person and learn from them.
And he says:
For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers. (Proverbs 11:14)
King Solomon teaches us that a person needs to work with strategies to achieve their positive goal!
And Solomon also says that to achieve salvation (success), one needs many advisors!
Therefore, a wise person will have expert advisors in various fields with whom they can consult about everything
From what to eat, how much to sleep, when to sleep, what to talk about with parents, what to talk about with one's wife, etc.
And King Solomon further says:
The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. (Proverbs 4:7)
And Ibn Ezra explains:
The beginning of wisdom is to acquire wisdom –
With some of your wealth, and if you cannot know it, give all your wealth.
And Rabbi Menachem HaMeiri explains:
And with all your acquisitions, acquire understanding –
That is: Both in acquiring your strengths, qualities, and nature, and in acquiring your assets.
She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. (Proverbs 3:15)
And Rashi explains:
Cannot compare with her.
They will not be equal in her value and their price in her price: [price=money].
And Malbim explains:
She is more precious than rubies – Rubies are precious because they are not found on the land where man lives but in another element which is the element of water, for they are found in the depths of the sea, and so the laws of wisdom are not found in human intellect, in the intellect dwelling in matter, but their origins are from heaven and from divine intellect which is even further away than the depths of the seas, deep and lofty, far far who can find it, and although one needs to give in exchange for wisdom the desires of the body and its pleasures and lusts, indeed “all your desires” that you give for it “cannot compare with her”, for she is more precious than all of them because through her you will attain things even more precious, because..
And King Solomon expands on this much more.
And if you say there's a lot of free knowledge and that's enough.. see what the Gemara says about this.
"A doctor who heals for free is worth nothing" (Bava Kamma 85a)
Meaning: Medicine that costs nothing – is worth nothing.
The message I want to tell you here, dear brother, is that you need to know that you are a son of a king and what your father is, he will always be your father no matter what you do, so too God is always your father (unless your soul is drawn from the husks, God forbid, and then He is your father only indirectly.. may God save us) no matter what you do.
And know that the most precious thing in our world is knowledge of the truth.
And know that there is nothing that will give you a better life in this world and the next than knowing the truth.
And for the truth, you should invest most of your strength, time, and resources!
So if you're not investing at least a few hundred or thousand shekels every month – what will become of you, friend!
The ignorant will buy a vacation for thousands of shekels in seconds, even take a loan with interest for it – but to buy a book for 100 or a course for 1000 is expensive for them and they will think about it a thousand times before!
An ignorant person in a restaurant in seconds spends a few hundred shekels without thinking twice and the food goes in one side comes out after a short time on the other side and leaves no eternal benefit.
So don't be ignorant!
Be a scholar, go to people who are world experts in their field and buy books, courses from them.
